On Friday, I fly to Alaska for a two-week backpack, roadtrip, mountain climbing adventure.
And while it will be a challenge to keep my mind focused this week at work, I also have to stay focused at home each night to make sure everything is done and everything I need is packed.
Prep week has begun!
I started my to-pack list weeks ago, so now it’s a matter of gathering everything from different storage places, cleaning and then fixing anything that’s broken.
The most fun — and also most challenging — part will come later this week as I attempt to pack everything and keep it below the weight limit.
In order to make sure I have enough weight allotted for gear, I usually cut back on town clothes and most liquids (like facewash, shampoo and toothpaste). Generally, those that dwell in the backcountry of Alaska don’t care if your hair is clean, therefore, neither will I.
Richard’s mom got us a luggage scale for Christmas, which has come in handy for our last few trips.
I hate to be that person on the plane who brings a HUGE carry on, but since the luggage restrictions, that’s been me. (Sorry, guys.)
In an attempt to cut weight, I shipped a 30-pound package up to Anchorage already, which should arrive the day before me.
Because Richard bought a mini-RV up in Alaska already, we can bring back all sorts of gear, but getting it out there initially has been the challenge.
How do you get ready for a vacation? Are you a last-minute packer?
